Destini Tomko of Springfield awarded a $16,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Destini Tomko of Springfield, a recent graduate of Lanphier High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2021 and awarded a $16,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program scholarship. She plans to major in medical laboratory science at UIS.

The scholarship can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Lanphier High School, she was a member of the marching band, drumline, choir and National Honor Society. She also played softball, volleyball and football.

“I am choosing UIS because it’s close to home, but also because I think the college will benefit me more than any other college that I have applied for previously,” she said. “I find myself having a bright future by attending the University of Illinois Springfield.”

Following graduation from UIS, “I plan to take the next step in my life and seek out my career path,” she said.

Capital Scholars Honors Program scholarships are competitive and are based on high school GPA. UIS is not requiring students to submit ACT/SAT scores for the 2021-24 academic years.

The Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year.
