Kayla Thomas of Decatur awarded four University of Illinois Springfield scholarships

Kayla Thomas, a resident of Decatur, and English major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the following scholarships for the 2019-2020 academic year: The AAUW-Sandra G. Hockenyos Scholarship, the AAUW-Wanda Chapel Scholarship, the Kathryn G. Patton Scholarship and the James L. Lundquist Memorial Scholarship.

Thomas has a passion for writing. She believes that sharing stories is rebellious and can change the world. “I believe that by reading what has come before, we get a glimpse of what the world was, is, and what it could be,” she said.

Following graduation, Thomas plans to pursue a career as an editor in an independent publishing house. She also plans to be a prison educator. “I plan to bring the narratives of those who cannot get their stories out to the world,” she said.

Thomas said UIS has allowed her to flourish as a writer. “My confidence has grown and my personal motivation and purpose in life has become clearer.”

The AAUW-Sandra G. Hockenyos Scholarship was established in honor of a former president of the organization whose commitment to community service and public education included the establishment of a Saturday morning enrichment program for academically tenacious students.

The AAWU-Wanda Chapel Scholarship honors a former president of the organization both at the local and state level. Chapel is credited with increasing civic and community involvement, including the first statewide Legislation Day.

Recipients of the Kathryn G. Patton Scholarship must be an English or Visual Arts major with a demonstrated sense of social and civic responsibility.

The James L. Lundquist Scholarship honors a man who, after a successful career as a financial consultant, volunteered as a member of the UIS Development Advisory Committee and was recognized for his leadership. The Lundquist scholarship is given to students studying to be teachers.

Sterling Armstrong of Lake Barrington awarded a $26,000 UIS Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship

Sterling Armstrong of Lake Barrington, a senior at Barrington Community High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $26,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship for tuition over 4 years. At UIS, he plans to major in management.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Barrington Community High School, he plays on the baseball team. He is also plays for the Illinois Indians Travel Baseball Team, part of the Illinois Travel Baseball Club.

The CAP Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year.

The program brings together intellectually strong students with talented, dedicated faculty to create a unique academic environment within the greater UIS community.

Capital Scholar Honors students participate in an interdisciplinary core curriculum designed to prepare students for their major and provide leadership opportunities.

In order to receive a $26,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship, the student must earn a 24 to a 26 on their ACT or a minimum of 1160 SAT and hold a minimum high school GPA of 3.76 or above.

Savannah Lashbrook of Marshall awarded an $18,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Savannah Lashbrook of Marshall, a senior at Marshall Community High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded an $18,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. At UIS, she plans to major in elementary education.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Marshall Community High School, she is a member of the volleyball and track teams. She is also part of the Marshall Leadership Team, Interact Service Club, Peers Actively Leading and Serving and International Club.

“I chose UIS because I love the campus and how welcoming everyone is,” she said. “I am excited for the art program at UIS. It is a big campus experience with less students, making for a great student-teacher ratio.”

Following graduation, she hopes to become an elementary school teacher, possibly teaching art.

Amine Medmoun of Chicago awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Amine Medmoun of Chicago, a senior at Bartlett High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $10,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years.

At UIS, he plans to major in computer science.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

He currently plays varsity soccer at Bartlett High School. Following graduation from UIS, he plans to finish his studies and play professional soccer.

Ashton Rigg of Bluffs, a senior at Bluffs High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded an $8,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years.

At UIS, he plans to major in criminology and criminal justice.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

He chose UIS because “it has the program for which I am interested,” he said.

Following graduation, he plans a career in law enforcement.

Delainee Gibson of Clarksville, Tennessee awarded a $32,000 UIS Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship

Delainee Gibson of Clarksville, Tennessee, a senior at West Creek High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $32,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Deans Scholarship for tuition over 4 years.

At UIS, she plans to major in accountancy and play on the UIS Prairie Stars volleyball team.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At West Creek High School, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Math Club and SHH. She also plays on the volleyball and basketball teams.

“I’m choosing UIS because of the good environment and volleyball,” she said.

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to become a CPA.

Kirsten Callaway of Germantown Hills awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Kirsten Callaway, a resident of Germantown Hills, and medical laboratory science major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Central Illinois Community Blood Center Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Callaway said she chose a degree in laboratory science because it combines her interest of learning the complexities of the human body, the biology of bacteria and the chemistry behind life.

“I believe I can research solutions to the many issues in the field of medicine that cost people their lives,” she said.

After graduation, Callaway said she plans to pursue a graduate degree and eventually a Ph.D. “Ultimately I would like to perform medical research,” said Callaway. “I believe there is a major lack of quality diagnostic testing for many diseases and cancers, as evidenced by the many diseases which can only be detected in the late stages.”

The Central Illinois Blood Center Scholarship is awarded to a deserving junior or senior student enrolled full time in the medical laboratory science program at UIS. The scholarship is designed to encourage qualified students to pursue careers as blood banking and transfusion medicine technologists.

Emily Zimmerman of Cary awarded dual University of Illinois Springfield scholarships

Emily Zimmerman, a resident of Cary, and medical laboratory science major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Central Illinois Community Blood Center Scholarship and the Health Professions Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Zimmerman said an interest in medical television shows in her youth, and her AP Biology class in high school, led her to UIS, where she discovered she could major in laboratory science.

“It is so unique and only offered at a few schools,” she said. Zimmerman plans to pursue a Medical Laboratory Scientist certification upon graduation.

She said one of her most memorable times at UIS was volunteering with her Medical Laboratory Science Club for the MLK Day of Service at the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield. “It was so rewarding,” she said. “It was also an interesting perspective for the MLS Club because we are normally behind the scenes of the treatment of these children and that day, we were behind the scenes in a different way.”

The Central Illinois Blood Center Scholarship is awarded to a deserving junior or senior student enrolled full-time in the medical laboratory science program at UIS. The scholarship is designed to encourage qualified students to pursue careers as blood banking and transfusion medicine technologists.

The Health Professions Scholarship was established to benefit deserving students seeking a degree in the health sciences.

Abigail Frohning of Sainte Marie awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Abigail Frohning, a resident of Sainte Marie and medical laboratory science major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Central Illinois Community Blood Center Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Frohning said a job-shadowing opportunity in high school is what piqued her interested in laboratory science. “I was always interested in science and how things worked and why,” she said. “During that day I looked at real blood samples underneath a microscope, made my own slides and learned how to make cultures. All of these things give technicians an answer.”

Further research into the field and education requirements led her to UIS.

While taking undergraduate classes, Frohning also plans to work as a Medical Laboratory Technician and eventually be involved in research. “I think innovation and learning more about the field in which I work is a very important part of expanding my knowledge and the knowledge of others.”

Jade Anderson of Chatham awarded a $30,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Jade Anderson of Chatham, a senior at Glenwood Senior High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $30,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years.

At UIS, she plans to major in communication and be part of the UIS cross country and track and field teams.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Glenwood, she is a member of the varsity cross country and track and field teams. She is also part of CrossFit XLT, Glenwood’s “Titan Fever” Show Choir and The Titan Torch. Outside of school, she works for the Chatham Clarion newspaper.

“I really love the communication program offered at UIS, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to run for UIS,” she said. “I love the team atmosphere - the coaches and the team members - and the sport!”

Following graduation from UIS, she wants to become a journalist.

Maxwell Schmidtke of Sheboygan awarded dual University of Illinois Springfield scholarships

Maxwell Schmidtke, a resident of Sheboygan, Wisconsin and sports management major at the
University of Illinois Springfield has been awarded the Byron Booth Memorial Scholarship and Robert and Marilyn Uteg Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Schmidtke said he chose sports management because of his love for math and golf. He is a member of the UIS Men’s Golf Team.

“Getting a degree in this field of study will allow me to play competitive golf in college and become PGA Professional after college,” he said.

Upon graduation, Schmidtke plans to become a certified PGA Professional. “I hope to work at a golf course and make an impact on the lives of others,” he said. He also hopes to play in a major championship in the future. “Working as a PGA Professional will give me the resources necessary to improve my skills and ultimately accomplish this lifelong goal,” he said.

The Bryon Booth Memorial Scholarship is awarded to first-year students at UIS. Students transitioning from high school to a university benefit from speakers and service opportunities, which aid in retention and success rates.

The Robert and Marilyn Uteg Scholarship honors a couple who were dedicated to customer service. Robert spent 31 years as an A.G. Edwards & Sons investment manager, and Marilyn worked her entire life for AT&T. Bob Uteg once defined success as, “finding happiness not only in your own lives, but in helping others to be happy also.” The Uteg scholarship is awarded to a high-merit freshman student at UIS.

Nicholas Neuber of Pawnee awarded a $20,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Nicholas Neuber of Pawnee, a senior at Pawnee High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for fall semester 2020 and awarded a $20,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. At UIS, he plans to major in computer science.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Pawnee High School, he is a member of the football, track and Scholastic Bowl teams. He is also part of the National Honor Society, Principal’s Advisory Council and Student Council.

He says he’s choosing UIS because “it’s affordable, local and just overall convenient.”

Following graduation from UIS, he would like to work for a big company, such as Apple or Microsoft.

Emily Kellum of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for fall semester 2020 and awarded a $4,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over two years.

At UIS, she plans to major in pre-nursing.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of two years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Notre Dame Regional High School, she plays on the basketball and soccer teams.

She chose UIS to be “close to home” and plans to enter the work force as a nurse following graduation.
