Noelle Barnes of Galesburg awarded a $4,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Noelle Barnes of Galesburg, a senior at Galesburg High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2021 and awarded a $4,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. She plans to major in chemistry at UIS.

The scholarship is awarded based on high school GPA and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Galesburg High School, she is a part of the choir. 

Barnes chose UIS because she loves “the atmosphere and the opportunities that UIS brings,” she said.

Following graduation, she plans to teach or go into a research position.

All undergraduate first year students are automatically eligible for Lincoln Merit Scholarships. These scholarships are automatically applied upon admission and are based solely on high school GPA. In order to receive $4,000 over four years, the student must have an unweighted GPA of 3.00-3.19. UIS is not requiring students to submit ACT/SAT scores for the 2021-22 academic year.

Eleni Monroe of Hilliard, Ohio receives a $30,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Eleni Monroe of Hilliard, Ohio, a senior at Hilliard Davidson High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2019 and awarded a $30,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. At UIS, she plans to major in chemistry with a focus in pre-medicine and play on the UIS Golf team.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Hilliard Davidson High, she plays golf and is a member of the orchestra and the National Honor Society. She is also a Freshman Focus Leader and a Renaissance Board Member.

“I chose UIS because I liked the campus, the educational opportunities and was offered an opportunity to play golf,” she said.

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to attend dental school to eventually become an orthodontist.

All incoming UIS freshmen are eligible to apply for Lincoln Merit Scholarships. The amount awarded is based upon the incoming student’s ACT or SAT score. To receive $30,000 over four years, students must earn a 27 to a 29 on their ACT or a minimum of 1280 SAT and hold a minimum high school GPA of 4.0 or above.

Brey Genenbacher of Camp Point awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Brey Genenbacher, a resident of Camp Point and double major in education and chemistry at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Ann. M. and Raymond Pearson Scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Genenbacher, a legacy whose brother also attended UIS, said she always knew she wanted to be a teacher.

She wasn’t sure what she wanted to teach, however, until her sophomore year in high school when she took a chemistry class.

“It was my favorite class. I looked forward to going every day,” she said. “My chemistry teacher expected a lot out of me, which made me work harder. I soon realized that teaching chemistry was something that I wanted to do with my life.”

Genenbacher says earning the scholarship will help make her a better teacher in the long run. “Less debt will mean I can afford to put more money into my classroom to help my students have the best learning environment possible,” she said.

The Ann M. and Raymond Pearson Capital Scholars Scholarship is awarded to two incoming freshmen participating in the Capital Scholars Honors Program.

Taliah Phillips of Springfield admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield

Taliah Phillips of Springfield, a recent graduate of Springfield Southeast High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for the fall 2018 term.

At Springfield Southeast High School, Phillips participated in track and field and cross-country.

“I’m choosing UIS because it’s a good environment for me,” she said.

“UIS is the place where I feel like I can find myself and become independent and achieve my goals.”

Phillips plans to major in chemistry with a pre-med track and hopes to pursue a career as a nurse upon graduation.

Breyanna Genenbacher of Camp Point awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Breyanna Genenbacher, a resident of Camp Point and chemistry education major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Ann. M and Raymond Pearson Capital Scholars Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Genenbacher, who also plays softball for UIS, said she became interested in teaching chemistry when she was a chemistry student in high school.

“I want to give students the love for chemistry that I have and hopefully make a difference in their lives,” she said.

Growing up in a small town, Genenbacher said she was looking for a college experience with a small-town feel.

During one campus visit, she was able to strike up a conversation with a UIS chemistry professor. “It made me realize UIS is where I belong,” she said.

She hopes to return to her hometown to teach high school chemistry after graduation.

To qualify for the Ann M. and Raymond Pearson Capital Scholars Scholarship, incoming freshman must also be part of the Capitol Scholars program. The Pearson scholarship is renewable for up to four years of each recipient’s full-time enrollment.

Jennifer Queller of Corona, California receives UIS Capital Scholars Honors Program Deans Scholarship

Jennifer Queller of Corona, California, a senior at Santiago High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield and awarded a $38,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship covering tuition over 4 years.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At UIS, Queller plans to major in chemistry. Upon graduation, she would like to work in the pharmaceutical development field.

Queller said she chose UIS because it was ranked highly in both academics and athletics. She will be a member of the UIS women’s golf team.

In high school, Queller was involved in golf, as the team captain, band, Girl Scouts and was part of the honors program.

The CAP Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year. The program brings together intellectually strong students with talented, dedicated faculty to create a unique academic environment within the greater UIS community.

Capital Scholar Honors students participate in an interdisciplinary core curriculum designed to prepare students for their major and provide leadership opportunities.
