Sarah Jansen of Highland awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Sarah Jansen, a resident of Highland, and sociology/anthropology major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Camerata Music Scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Jansen is on the pre-med track at UIS and hopes to work in emergency medicine someday.

She said a knee surgery in high school led to her passion in medicine.

“While in the hospital I was able to see the thought process of the physicians and the flow of the hospital. I learned that I would like to be challenged on a day-to-day basis like these doctors. I also wanted to help others.”

Jansen is a part of the Capital Honors Scholarship program on campus.

“The CAP program helps teach students about using more than one discipline or perspective to solve a problem. I believe this is very important for someone going into the medical field because sometimes it takes more than one specialty physician to come up with a diagnosis or patient care plan.”

Jansen also plays the trumpet in the UIS Band.

UIS Camerata Scholarships are awarded to deserving students who devote time and effort to provide leadership for existing music ensembles and maintain high quality Camerata ensembles. The Music Camerata is a group of non-major music scholarship students who perform in a variety of musical combinations for campus events throughout the academic year.
