Jared Enlow of O'Fallon receives a $10,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Jared Enlow of O'Fallon, a senior at O'Fallon Township High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for fall semester 2019 and awarded a $10,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. He plans to major in medical laboratory science at UIS.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At O'Fallon Township High, he is a member of the Spanish Club and Key Club.

Following graduation from UIS, he plans to obtain a job in his field.

All incoming UIS freshmen are eligible to apply for Lincoln Merit Scholarships. The amount awarded is based upon the incoming student’s ACT or SAT score. To receive $10,000 over four years, students must earn a 21 to a 23 on their ACT or a minimum of 1060 SAT and hold a minimum high school GPA of 3.26 or above.

Kristin Hall of Jerseyville awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Kristin Hall, a resident of Jerseyville and clinical laboratory science major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Central Illinois Community Blood Center Scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Hall said she transferred to UIS specifically for the CLS major.

“The CLS major at UIS is a highly advanced program in comparison to other schools,” says Hall. “I feel like I have already learned so much and I know that there is so much more to come.”

Hall is on track to graduate this May and has already secured a position in the Surgical Pathology Department at Memorial Medical Center.

“I will be an interactive part of the diagnostic process and help people feel better all from behind the comfort of my microscope,” she said. Hall is also considering several graduate programs in pathology.

The Central Illinois Community Blood Center Scholarship is awarded to junior or senior full-time students enrolled in the Clinical Laboratory Science program at UIS. The scholarship is designed to encourage qualified students to pursue careers as blood banking and transfusion medicine technologists.

Kayla Green of Chicago admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield

Kayla Green of Chicago, a senior at Von Steuben Metro Science High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for the fall 2018 term.

At Von Steuben, she is involved in dance, Book Club and the Sign Language Club. She says she chose UIS because she loves the “small environment UIS has built.”

At UIS, she plans to major in Clinical Laboratory Science. Following graduation, she plans to become a Cytotechnologist.

Emily Zimmerman of Cary awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Emily Zimmerman, a resident of Cary and clinical laboratory science major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Leona Stanford Vollintine Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Although she already had an interest in the medical field, Zimmerman said she developed a love of microscopes during her high school biology class.

It was a meeting with a UIS Admissions Counselor that turned her onto a career in clinical laboratory science. “He told me about the CLS major and my potential career choices after I graduated,” said Zimmerman. “This ultimately sealed the deal for what college I would attend after high school.”

Zimmerman is now actively involved on campus in the Clinical Laboratory Science Club.

She counts the Prairie Star 5K as one of her college highlights because the CLS Club ran as a group. “We are like a family due to the very few number of clinical lab science majors at UIS,” she said.

“I plan to continue being active in the club to help get the word out about CLS Club to other UIS students, even local high school students who may attend UIS once they graduate,” said Zimmerman.

The Leona Stafford Vollintine Scholarship was established to award full-time students pursuing a program of study leading to a career that promotes and assists the general public welfare.

To qualify for the Leona Stafford Vollintine Scholarship, students must be enrolled in the College of Education and Human Services and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Emily Zimmerman of Cary receives a scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Emily Zimmerman of Cary, a recent graduate of Cary-Grove High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield and awarded a $28,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship for tuition over 4 years.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years, if the student maintains a college GPA of 3.0 or higher.

At UIS, she plans to major in clinical laboratory science and hopes to one day work for her hometown hospital.

“I chose UIS because it has the size of a small private college, but the quality of education of a large public university,” said Zimmerman.

In high school, she played in the marching band, concert band and jazz band. She was also a member of the scholastic bowl team, winning second place in the conference her senior year. She was also on the math team, a member of the Spanish Club, Friends of Rachel Club and the CVC (cinema, video games and comics) Club.

The CAP Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year.

The program brings together intellectually strong students with talented, dedicated faculty to create a unique academic environment within the greater UIS community.

Capital Scholar Honors students participate in an interdisciplinary core curriculum designed to prepare students for their major and provide leadership opportunities.
