Sarah Jett of Chatham awarded a $12,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Sarah Jett of Chatham, a senior at Glenwood Senior High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2021 and awarded a $12,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. She plans to major in biology with a pre-medical focus at UIS. 

The scholarship is awarded based on high school GPA and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Glenwood Senior High School, she has been a member of the choir all four years. 

“I chose UIS because it is close to home and is low cost,” she said.

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to attend veterinary school.

All undergraduate first year students are automatically eligible for Lincoln Merit Scholarships. These scholarships are automatically applied upon admission and are based solely on high school GPA. In order to receive $12,000 over four years, the student must have an unweighted GPA of 3.0-3.25. UIS is not requiring students to submit ACT/SAT scores for the 2021-24 academic years.

Jacob Hanna of Wichita, Kansas awarded a $34,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Jacob Hanna of Wichita, Kansas, a senior at Maize High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2021 and awarded a $34,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship.

The scholarship can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Maize High School, he’s part of the basketball, football and track teams. He’s also a peer helper and a member of the student council, Climate Club and National Honor Society.

“When I visited the campus, it felt like home,” Hanna said. “As well as the strong sense of community support I felt, UIS seemed like a place where I could really succeed.”

Following graduation from UIS, he plans to use his biology degree to work for the government, possibly for the United States Geological Survey.

Capital Scholars Honors Program scholarships are competitive and are based on high school GPA. UIS is not requiring students to submit ACT/SAT scores for the 2021-22 academic year.

The Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year.

Dhara Patel of Taylorville, a May 2020 graduate of Taylorville High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $28,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship for tuition over 4 years.

At UIS, she plans to major in biology with a focus on pre-medicine.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Taylorville High School, she was part of the National Honor Society, student council and Chem Club.

She chose UIS because it is “close to home, less tuition and you earn a University of Illinois degree.”

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to attend medical school.

The CAP Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year.

Potrawski is currently a member of the Beta Club, student council, National Honors Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Christian Youth Organization, Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, Outdoor Adventures Club and the Illinois Democracy School Club. She is also a member of the dance team, tennis team and is a manager for the Mascoutah High basketball team. She has also completed many community service projects and worked/volunteered on multiple farms.

Following graduation from UIS, Potrawski would like to continue her education and become a veterinarian working on small farms.

“I have always loved the small town life,” she said. “I enjoy going to the grocery store and running into my school bus driver from elementary school. I desire nothing more than the opportunity to practice as a large animal vet through small communities. UIS being a smaller school in a rural area of Illinois will provide me with the experience and opportunities I need to do well in veterinarian school.”

She also started a horror movies club and is president of Best Buddies, an organization dedicated to ending discrimination against people with intellectual development disorders. “I’m choosing UIS because it feels like home to me,” she said. “From the moment I first heard about it to now, that home feeling has been there. I was born and raised in Chicago, so Springfield isn’t far from my original home. I get to still see family and go to events.”

Kassidy Miller of Havana, a senior at Havana High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2019 classes. She plans to major in biology with a focus in pre-medicine at UIS.

At Havana High, she a member of the softball, volleyball, flags and dance teams. She’s also a Student Council and Rotary Club officer, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Girls H Club, Eco Club, Science Club and the National Honor Society.

“I chose UIS because it has a good medical program and it is close to home,” she said. “It feels welcoming and cozy.”

Following graduation, she would like to further her education and one day become an orthopedic physician or physician assistant.

Alexis Hogan Hobson of White Hall awarded a University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Alexis Hogan Hobson, a resident of White Hall and biology, pre-med major at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been awarded the Daniel A. and Carolyn Schnirring Dungan Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Hobson said she chose biology and pre-med because it will equip her to enter medical school after graduation, where she hopes to specialize in family medicine or psychiatry.

Hobson also has a passion for singing. She was involved in high school chorus before coming to UIS and is now involved in the chorus on campus.

“Singing is one of my greatest passions and I’m so blessed and grateful to be able to pursue singing along with my education and other hobbies,” she said.

That passion for music is what made her eligible for the Daniel A. and Carolyn Schnirring Dungan Scholarship, which is awarded to an undergraduate student who is involved in Visual Arts or the music program at UIS.

Inspired by their own children, the Dungans believe a strong education requires students to balance both academics and arts.

“A scholarship sets students on a path,” said Carolyn. “That’s what is really important to us, that these kids get the opportunity for an education.”

Carson Vance of Roselle, a senior at Lake Park High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield and awarded a $24,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship for tuition over 4 years.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At UIS, she plans to major in biology and play on the UIS Prairie Stars women’s basketball team. She also played basketball at Lake Park High School.

“There are an abundant amount of great opportunities at UIS for me both academically and athletic wise for women's basketball,” she said.

Following graduation, she plans to continue her education and become a physician assistant.

The CAP Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year.

The program brings together intellectually strong students with talented, dedicated faculty to create a unique academic environment within the greater UIS community.

Capital Scholar Honors students participate in an interdisciplinary core curriculum designed to prepare students for their major and provide leadership opportunities.

In order to receive a $24,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship, the student must earn a 24 to a 26 on their ACT or a minimum of 1160 SAT and hold a minimum high school GPA of 3.75.
