Mercedes Bryant of Springfield awarded a $16,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Mercedes Bryant of Springfield, a senior at Lanphier High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $16,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. At UIS, she plans to major in biochemistry.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Lanphier High School, she plays soccer and is a member of the Student Government Association and National Honor Society.

“I am choosing UIS because I think it is the best option for me,” she said.

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to attend medical school in order to become a pediatric oncologist.

All incoming UIS freshmen are eligible to apply for Lincoln Merit Scholarships. The amount awarded is based upon the incoming student’s ACT or SAT score. To receive $16,000 over four years, students must earn a 21-23 on their ACT or a minimum 1060 SAT score and hold a minimum high school GPA of 4.0 or above.

Calista Cox of Alton receives a full-ride scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Calista Cox of Alton, a senior at Alton High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2019 and awarded a Capital Scholars Honors Program Chancellor’s Full-Ride Scholarship. She plans to major in biochemistry and play on the UIS Prairie Stars women’s soccer team.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Alton High, she plays on the women's varsity soccer team where she was named first team all-conference, academic all-conference and all-sectional. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Biology Club and Spanish Club.

“UIS offers me the opportunity to continue my soccer career while being a part of the Capital Scholars Honors Program and majoring in biochemistry,” she said. “This program will prepare me well for medical school.”

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to attend medical school and work toward becoming either a gynecologist or a pediatric/neonatal surgeon.

The Capital Scholars Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year. The program brings together intellectually strong students with talented, dedicated faculty to create a unique academic environment within the greater UIS community.

Capital Scholar Honors students participate in an interdisciplinary core curriculum designed to prepare students for their major and provide leadership opportunities.

In order to receive a Capital Scholars Honors Program Chancellor’s Full-Ride Scholarship, the student must earn a 32 to a 36 on their ACT or a minimum of 1450 SAT and hold a minimum high school GPA of 3.5 or above.

Deora Inniss of Knoxville receives a $26,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Deora Inniss of Knoxville, a senior at Knoxville Senior High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2019 and awarded a $26,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship for tuition over 4 years. She plans to major in biochemistry.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Knoxville High, she is a member of the band, drama club, student council, National Honor Society, 4-H and the Binary Bullets Robotics team.

“I chose UIS because it is a small in-state school, with the opportunities of a big state school, due to its location in the state capital. It is also far enough away for me to spread my wings, but close enough for me to remember my roots.”

Following graduation from UIS, Inniss plans to continue her education by attending medical school. She hopes to become an OB-GYN.

Christina King of Springfield receives a $30,000 scholarship from the University of Illinois Springfield

Christina King of Springfield, a senior at Lanphier High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2019 and awarded a $30,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. She plans to major in biochemistry at UIS.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Lanphier High, she is involved in student government, National Honor Society and several language clubs.

King adds that she chose UIS because it “is a really good school and I wanted to stay close to home.”

Following graduation from UIS, King would like to continue her education in a veterinary or optometry program.

Emily Jones of Pana awarded a $38,000 UIS Capital Scholars Honors Program Deans Scholarship

Emily Jones of Pana, a senior at Pana Senior High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield and awarded a $38,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Deans Scholarship for tuition over 4 years.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Pana High, she is involved in band, National Honor Society, Foreign Language Club and Drama Club.

Jones will major in biochemistry at UIS and plans to attend veterinary school following graduation in order to become a veterinary surgeon.

She says she chose UIS because it was a “small campus with a strong science curriculum.”

Tiffanie Coburn of Chicago admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield

Tiffanie Coburn of Chicago, a senior at Rauner College Prep, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for the fall 2018 term.

At Rauner College Prep, she participates in Poetry Club, plays Rugby and is active in Zumba.

“I’m choosing UIS because the reputation that it holds at my school is outstanding regarding its academics and events. I can not only get an excellent education, but I’m also not so far away from home,” said Coburn.

“When I see UIS, I see a successful, prestigious and awe-inspiring future.”

Coburn plans to major in biochemistry and hopes to pursue a career as an epidemiologist after graduation.

“I plan to answer the questions that keep me up at night,” she said.

Ana Boza Martin of Spain admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield

Ana Boza Martin of Madrid, Spain, who recently graduated high school from Fomento Fundacion, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for the fall 2017 term.

At UIS, Martin will play on the UIS women’s tennis team and major in biochemistry. In high school, she was a member of a volunteer group and played on the tennis, volleyball and baseball teams.

She says she chose UIS because, “I like the study program, the tennis team and how much they want to improve and work hard in order to achieve their goals.”

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to earn a master’s degree and to find a job that she enjoys.

Tyler Pasley of Shelbyville, a senior at Shelbyville High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield and awarded a Capital Scholars Honors Program Chancellors Full Ride Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At UIS, Pasley will major in biochemistry. “I love the small size, and I felt comfortable when I visited,” said Pasley.

At Shelbyville High School, Pasley runs cross country and track. He is president of the National Honor Society and is a Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout. He is a member of the principal's cabinet, the Spanish Honor Society, Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) and Mathletes.
