Rachel Mellott of Charleston awarded $52,000 in scholarships from the University of Illinois Springfield

Rachel Mellott of Charleston, a May 2020 graduate of Charleston High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield as a public policy major for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded $52,000 in scholarships.

Mellott was awarded a $12,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for four years ($3,000 per academic year), which is renewable if the student maintains GPA requirements. She was also awarded a $40,000 Camerata Music Performance Scholarship for four years ($10,000 per academic year), which is renewable if requirements are met.

At Charleston High School, she performed with the choir and was part of the theatre program.

“I am excited to be part of the Camerata Music Program because I was in choir for eight years, and theatre for twelve years,” she said. “This scholarship will make all of the hard work over the last twelve years worth it.”

Following graduation from UIS, she plans to earn a master’s degree.

The Camerata Music Performance Scholarship is for non-music majors who wish to perform in UIS Music ensembles. Students must submit a resume and participate in a live performance audition to obtain the scholarship. Camerata students perform in a variety of musical combinations for campus events throughout the academic year.

Alice Abegunde of Homewood awarded a $10,000 University of Illinois Springfield scholarship

Alice Abegunde of Homewood, a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $10,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. At UIS, she plans to major in criminology and criminal justice.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Homewood-Flossmoor High School, she is a member of the mock trial team, student government, National Honor Society and leads the Friends of Rachel Club.

Following graduation from UIS, she plans on becoming a homicide detective. Her long-term goal is to open a school.

At Perspectives Leadership Academy, she is a member of the step team, volleyball team, yearbook and digital photography club.

“I chose UIS based on the many different courses for each major,” she said.

Rudie Logerquist of Chatham, a senior at Glenwood Senior High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2020 and awarded a $20,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. At UIS, she plans to major in legal studies.

The scholarship is awarded based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

At Glenwood Senior High School, she plays softball and is a member of the marching band, concert band (clarinet, piano and violin) and color guard.

“I chose UIS because it is close to home, offers small class sizes, athletics and great programs,” said Logerquist, whose mother is a UIS alum.

NaKaya Hughes of Champaign admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield

NaKaya Hughes of Champaign, a senior at The High School of Saint Thomas More, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2019 classes. She plans to major in public administration and will play on the UIS Prairie Stars women’s basketball team.

At Saint Thomas More, she is involved in concert band, choir, spring musicals and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). She is also a member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams.

Daws says she chose UIS because she loves the city of Springfield and feels UIS is a great place to continue her education.

Collin Moseley of Flora, a senior at Flora High School (FHS), has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2019 and awarded a $14,000 Lincoln Scholarship for tuition over four years. He plans to major in political science at UIS.

Moseley holds the Illinois seat on the National Youth Leadership Council and is the student body president at Flora High School. He’s also the vice president of Illinois Future Farmers of America (FFA) Section 23, committee chairman for Veterans’ Wall of Honor, a member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA); the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and plays on the FHS tennis team.

Moseley learned about UIS in eighth grade while serving as an honorary page for Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

“While doing this, I learned of the opportunities available through the Capitol and through UIS,” he said. “Knowing these things, before I even came to campus, I wanted to be a Prairie Star. So after making an official visit to the campus, the opportunities, the city which I love, and the beauty of this school made it a very easy decision for me.”

Following graduation from UIS, Moseley plans to remain in Springfield working in legislation and government affairs in a position that he hopes will lead him to a job in Washington, D.C. He also has ambitions to run for a political office.

At Lincoln Community High, he is a member of the cross country, track and soccer teams. He plans to major in criminology and criminal justice at UIS and compete on the UIS Prairie Stars cross country and track and field teams.

Diego Alejandro Prats, a senior at Dwight Township High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield and awarded a $24,000 Lincoln Scholarship for tuition over four years.

At Dwight Township High School, Prats is involved in band, Scholastic Bowl and the Spanish Club.

In order to receive a $20,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program Scholarship, the student must earn a 24 to a 26 on their ACT or a minimum of 1290 SAT and hold a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
